Contestants

Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert
Age: 27
Birthdate: January 29, 1982
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Audition city: San Francisco, CA
Bio: A stage actor since he was young, Adam began singing at the age of 10. Up until recently he was performing in the cast of Wicked. His influences include Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, and David Bowie.

Known for his over-the-top style and incredibly elastic voice, Adam instantly became a fan and judge favorite during Hollywood Week when he sang “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Do You Believe.” If his polished, incredible stage presence didn’t make him stand out from the others, his emo-styled hair and dark, flamboyant clothes would. Though he has been working in the theatre for years, Adam reports that he would not want to have “Theatre Week” during his stint on American Idol, as he would prefer to explore different genres of music. His wild performances have impressed the judges and won him fans, and judging by the screams in the audience, he is a shoo-in to end up in the finals.

Alexis Grace

Alexis Grace

Alexis Grace
Age: 21
Birthdate: June 9, 1987
Hometown: Memphis, TN
Audition city: Louisville, KY
Bio: Singing since she was 7 years old, the pretty and petite Alexis Grace is a member of the concert choir at University of Memphis. She gave birth to a daughter, Ryan Elizabeth, at age 19 and is currently engaged to Ryan’s father, who is active in the military. Alexis’s hobbies include dancing and playing the guitar.

Judge Kara DioGuardi suggested Alexis “dirty up” her image after her audition, and Alexis has been making a concerted effort to do that, picking sexy songs and playing them off with attitude. For a little girl, she sure does have a big voice. Alexis was voted off the show March 18 after Grand Ole Opry Week, for which she performed “Jolene.”

Allison Iraheta

Allison Iraheta

Allison Iraheta
Age: 16
Birthdate: April 27, 1992
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Audition city: San Francisco, CA
Bio: One of the two youngest competitors on the show this season, flamboyantly red-haired Allison Iraheta is a junior high student. She is a classically trained singer and began singing at the age of 5. Several years ago she competed on a television show called “Quinceanera,” where she won $50,000 and a recording contract. In addition to singing, Allison also plays the guitar.

Allison’s niche in the show seems to be that of female rocker. Her favorite male singer is Michael Jackson, while Pink is her favorite female performer.

Anoop Desai
Age: 22
Birthdate: December 20, 1986
Hometown: Chapel Hill, NC
Audition city: Kansas City, MO
Bio: Anoop Desai is currently working on getting his master’s degree in folklore at the University of North Carolina. While he was an undergraduate studying political science and Southern studies, Anoop was a member of the UNC Clef Hangers, an a cappella singing group. He was a member for all four years of his studies and became president of the group in his senior year. In high school Anoop performed in Oliver, The Wiz, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Brought back as a wild card, Anoop has long been touted as having an extreme likeability factor by the judges. His full potential has yet to be revealed so far on the show, however. Anoop initially auditioned for the show to honor the memory of a slain UNC friend, Eve Carson.

Danny Gokey

Danny Gokey

Danny Gokey
Age: 28
Birthdate: April 24, 1980
Hometown: Milwaukee, WI
Audition city: Kansas City, MO
Bio: Danny Gokey is a music leader at his church, in addition to being the president and co-founder of a non-profit organization. His hobbies include salsa dancing and playing the piano. Despite this, judge Simon Cowell derided Danny’s dancing during Michael Jackson week when Danny sang “P.Y.T.”

Danny is already famous for his backstory, which is, briefly, that his wife passed away four weeks before he auditioned for the show. Danny’s best friend, Jamar Rogers, auditioned with him and made it to Hollywood Week but no further. In addition to his marked resemblance to Academy Award nominee actor Robert Downey Jr., Danny is remarkable for his mellow yet raspy voice. Judge Paula Abdul has already predicted Danny will be in the finals of this season.

Jasmin Murray

Jasmin Murray

Jasmine Murray
Age: 17
Birthdate: March 14, 1992
Hometown: Starkville, MS
Audition city: Jacksonville, FL
Bio: Jasmine has been singing since she was 3 years old and currently attends the Mississippi School of the Arts.

The American Idol judges groomed Jasmine as a commercial, package artist, but she was unable to make an impression with the voting public. However, Jasmine was brought back as a wild card contestant but, despite her best efforts at “I’ll Be There” by the Jackson 5, was eliminated in thirteenth place March 11.

Jorge Nunez

Jorge Nunez

Jorge Nunez
Age: 20
Birthdate: May 12, 1988
Hometown: Carolina, Puerto Rico
Audition city: San Juan, Puerto Rico
Bio: Currently in his fourth year of studies at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, Jorge Nunez is fluent in English, Spanish, and French.

Jorge became a crowd favorite with his winning personality and emotional style of singing. However, he faltered on Michael Jackson week, when he sang “Never Can Say Goodbye” in an old-fashioned manner that won no points with either the judges or the viewing public, and it was then that he was sent home March 11.

Kris Allen
Age: 23
Birthdate: June 24, 1985
Hometown: Conway, AR
Audition city: Louisville, KY
Bio: Kris Allen is a student at the University of Central Arkansas and is pursuing a degree in business. He has been married to his wife for approximately 7 months. In addition to singing, Kris enjoys playing the guitar and has been doing both since he was 13.

Though he flew under the radar during Hollywood Week, Kris immediately began to shine during the semifinals. His endearing personality and cuteness, in addition to his Jack Johnson/Jason Mraz sound, have made him an instant favorite with the viewers.

Lil Rounds

Lil Rounds

Lil Rounds
Age: 23
Birthdate: November 14, 1984
Hometown: Memphis, TN
Audition city: Kansas City, MO
Bio: Lil is married and has three children. She works as a customer service representative, but she has also been singing since she was 3 years old.

Lil is another contestant on this season’s show with an unfortunate backstory. Some time ago her home was destroyed by a tornado, and she and her family have been living in a hotel since. She made a big impression on the judges during her audition, where Judge Randy Jackson called her a mixture of Fantasia Barrino and Mary J. Blige.

Matt Giraud
Age: 23
Birthdate: May 11, 1985
Hometown: Kalamazoo, MI
Audition city: Louisville, KY
Bio: Matt graduated from Western Michigan University in 2007 and has lived in Michigan all of his life. He currently works as a dueling piano player in Kalamazoo and enjoys performing in local Michigan spots. He also plays the drums. Known as “White Chocolate” because he was one of the only white kids in his Detroit gospel choir, Matt has participated in the Detroit World Outreach church in Redford Township and was in the choir at Ypsilanti’s Lincoln High.

Billed as this season’s Justin Timberlake, Matt has a smooth, mellow voice and has been praised by the judges for his soulful style. He was voted out during the semifinal rounds after a subpar performance of “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay but was brought back as a wild card.

Megan Joy Corkrey

Megan Joy Corkrey

Megan Joy Corkrey
Age: 23
Birthdate: August 5, 1985
Hometown: Sandy, UT
Audition city: Salt Lake City, UT
Bio: Currently working as a font designer, Megan is the divorced mother of 2-year-old Ryder. She has been singing since the age of 3 and cites Bjork as her favorite artist. As well as singing, Megan also professes to be a “foodie.” She has seven tattoos, including a colorful sleeve on her right arm.

Megan initially showed an old-fashioned, unique sound at her audition that the judges praised. However, she did not make it through the semifinal round but was brought back as a wild card contestant. In addition to her unusual voice, Megan has exhibited some dance moves while performing that have raised several eyebrows. Megan was voted off the show April 1 after an ill-advised Bob Marley song during iTunes Downloads week and was not considered for a Judges’ Save after she sassed Simon.

Michael Sarver
Age: 28
Birthdate: February 9, 1981
Hometown: Jasper, TX
Audition city: Phoenix, AZ
Bio: Married with two children, Jeremy Michael Sarver famously works as a roughneck on an oil rig. He can play the guitar, drums, and piano, and he says he has always wanted to be a singer/songwriter. Michael also is the worship leader at his church.

Michael wowed the judges with his impressive pipes during his audition and has received a large amount of screen time because not only of his unusual job, which is ranked as the fifth most dangerous job in the world, but because of his professed dedication to his family. He was voted off the show March 26 after his Motown-Week-inspired “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” left something to be desired.

Scott McIntyre

Scott McIntyre

Scott MacIntyre
Age: 23
Birthdate: June 22, 1985
Hometown: Scottsdale, AZ
Audition city: Phoenix, AZ
Bio: Starting college at the young age of 14, Scott graduated from Arizona State University at the age of 19. He went on to attend graduate school in London, England. He is a classically trained pianist who also plays the guitar and drums. Scott has been profiled by media sources such as CNN, USA Today, Headline News, and others and has produced, engineered, and released six full-length CDs.

Almost completely blind since birth, Scott has described his visual abilities as seeing through a straw. A couple of years ago, he was also diagnosed with a failing kidney and received a new kidney from the wife of his piano teacher at Arizona State University. His tremendous self-possession has impressed both the judges and fans all over, and though Scott may not have one of the best voices in the competition, he is certainly not one to rule out.

Here’s some of our favorite contestants for good reasons and bad.

Megan Cockrey was one of our favorite contestants.

Carrie Underwood nails her audition and sets the bar for what others really need to do to become the next American Idol.

This is what everybody imagines their American Idol audition will be like. David Cook lays it down in his. Can the others this season?
